Escalating strike action by the Maritime union demanding excessive pay increases for semi skilled and unskilled workers is holding the Australian economy to ransom to the tune of more than 1 million dollars a day in lost revenue, according to Shadow Employment and Workplace Relations Minister, Senator Eric Abetz.
CHIEF COOKS AND BOTTLE WASHER’S SET TO CLEAN UP UNDER LABOR.
“With the Labor backed union movement now given the green light by Ms Gillard’s new Fair Work scheme, the Maritime union is demanding wage hikes for its unskilled workers of between $70,000 and $100,000 per employee per year”.
“The MUA’s outrageous wage demands would see maritime workers such as those employees working as kitchen hands, stewards, dishwashers and basic cooks potentially earning up to $230,000 a year”.
“Let’s consider that, if a Maritime union seaman whose job is to do the dishes for 15 crew three times a day, earning up to $230,000pa, working 5 days a week, that equates to almost $20 dollars for each plate in the sink”, says Senator Abetz.
“The escalating strike action by the MUA is now threatening to interrupt gas supplies in Victoria and Western Australia. There are also potential delays to rig movements and project construction costing industry more than an estimated 1 million dollars a day”.
“Ms Gillard has the power to step in and stop this outrageous strike action, but she won’t because these demands by the Maritime union are just the tip of the iceberg and its ‘ pay back time’ for the unions for the tens of millions of dollars they spent bankrolling Labor prior to the last election”.
“In the meantime Ms Gillard’s failure to act by protecting the interests of Labor’s union cronies is costing the Australian economy millions of dollars in much needed revenue at a time when the nation is still struggling to recover from the global financial crisis”.
