Gold Coast, Queensland, Saturday, 14th April 2012: IN a fitting tribute to the late Michael Peterson, three generations of Coolangatta surfers in the form of Sheldon Simkus (Snapper Rocks, Qld), Dean Morrison (Snapper Rocks, Qld) and none other than Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew all advanced through the opening round of the Chiko MP Classic today, in powerful one-metre waves at Duranbah Beach.
However, with Peterson’s passing only two weeks prior to this weekend’s 11th annual surfing event named in his honour – The MP Classic, the day undoubtedly belonged to 1978 World Champion Wayne ‘Rabbit’ Batholomew, who entered the event as a tribute to his fellow iconic Coolangatta surfer.
Earlier in the day, Bartholomew took part in a momentous paddle-out memorial service held at Peterson’s home break of Kirra Point, where hundreds of family, friends and fellow surfers including the likes of Kelly Slater and Mick Fanning also gathered to honour Peterson’s memory.
Bartholomew (9.10 points) then donned the competition rash vest in the afternoon, where he advanced into the Round of 64 surfers after finishing second behind young Sheldon Simkus (9.53 points), eliminating Wesley Sieberhagen (Currumbin, Qld – 6.57) who finished in third place respectively.
The AUD$10,000, Chiko MP Classic will resume tomorrow where an event champion will be crowned.
The 2012 Chiko Queensland Championship Circuit also boasts a stellar AUD$30,000 prize-pool, with an extra AUD$500 randomly awarded to four competitors who compete in all four events.
Based on competitors’ best three-of-four results, the series’ top two athletes will also get the chance to compete against the world’s best surfers at the 2013 ASP World Tour Quiksilver Pro Trials.
To ensure the QCC‘s top two athletes are performing at their optimum for the Quiksilver Pro Trials, Surfing Queensland in conjunction with Surfing Australia will provide two-days of training at the world-class Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre.
Also on offer will be the highly sought after XXXX Summer Bright Lager ‘Wave of the Weekend,’ with four cartons of XXXX Summer Bright Lager awarded to the competitor who registers the event’s highest single wave score (out of a possible 10 points) across the two-day competition.
The Chiko MP Classic is proudly supported by Chiko, XXXX Summer Bright Lager, Australia’s Surfing Life, Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre, Five and half Sunglasses, the Peterson Family, Kirra Surfriders Club and Surfing Queensland.
