TAHITI August 18, 2012. West Australian surfer Yadin Nicol had no answer to red-hot Brazilian Miguel Pupo on the second day of the world championship tour event at Teahupoo reef in Tahiti.
The 20-year-old Pupo netted the day's best two-wave total of 18.97 points to eliminate fellow tour rookie Nicol (16.97) in their round-two encounter in waves approaching two metres.
Matt Wilkinson, Adam Melling and Bede Durbidge also had an early end to their event while Australian heat winners were Kieren Perrow and Kai Otton.
Pupo will face a tough opponent in round three, drawing 2011 event finalist and former world No.3 Owen Wright.
Another round three match-up will feature two former finalists in Hawaiian Fredrick Patacchia and former world champion Mick Fanning, who is among nine Australians remaining.
The others are Joel Parkinson, Julian Wilson, Adrian Buchan, Taj Burrow and Josh Kerr.
Perrow was one of Friday's better performers, netting 16.60 points to down Tiago Pires of Portugal (10).
He next takes on Brazil's world No.4 Adriano de Souza.
"It's been a tough start to 2012 for me so it feels great to get a heat win again," Perrow said.
"It's just about putting smart heats together.
"Today's conditions are so much cleaner than yesterday's so when the waves do come through they have great potential."
The Billabong Pro Tahiti is event five of 10 on the world tour.
